Alum Highlight / Lucy Mink '95

In celebration of the  exhibition, we are sharing a series of interviews featuring our classes of 1995 and 1996. Join us here in learning more about  ’95 and her creative practice:

Which year did you graduate and what brought you to 51Ϲ for your MFA?

I graduated in 1995 and I honestly picked 51Ϲ because the music scene in Minneapolis at the time also in the same way that I went to Georgia for undergrad I wanted somewhere else that was far from where I grew up. MPLS seemed also more a place I could stay after graduation.

How did your creative practice change while you were at 51Ϲ?

I don’t think I could answer that briefly. I really started from scratch and dedicated the two years to experimentation/ socialization and fun. I was always painting and I surrounded myself with other painters that I connected with ( mostly undergrad juniors and seniors and a few painters from the MFA classes and my mentor David Rich.

Do you have a favorite memory from your time in the program?

Yes a lot, seeing Casper Brotzmann at 7th street and Alex Chilton at First Avenue and of course Nirvana in St. Paul.

Mark Mallman taking me on a tour of the restaurants and record stores near 51Ϲ when I first arrived because I met him early on.

Going out one night,
Having 8 people in my Volvo station wagon, 3 of them being over 6ft. 4” and me being glad I was in the drivers seat.

What is next? Any new projects or life events that are in the pipeline?

Just trying to keep experimenting alive inside the studio. I want to make a lot more monoprints, continuing what I started at Dartmouth in 2018.
