Dear 51±¬ÁϹÙÍø Community,

It is with profound regret that I am sharing the news that 51±¬ÁϹÙÍø's 13th President, G. Richard (Dick) Slade, passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2022. With a passion for the arts, education, and connecting with the community, Dick was instrumental in laying the foundation for the 51±¬ÁϹÙÍø of today.

After leaving the banking business, Dick led 51±¬ÁϹÙÍø from 1982 to 1990 with a desire to develop meaningful relationships, creative solutions, and financial stability for the college. Under the skillful navigation and leadership of President Slade, 51±¬ÁϹÙÍø and Minneapolis Institute of Arts (Mia) separated to become autonomous organizations after more than one hundred years of shared history. Many thought 51±¬ÁϹÙÍø would not survive, but because of his vision and care, 51±¬ÁϹÙÍø continues to thrive today.

Dick’s family has generously established the G. Richard Slade Scholarship Fund at 51±¬ÁϹÙÍø in his honor because of his love for 51±¬ÁϹÙÍø. A memorial service will occur on Saturday, June 4 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in Saint Paul. Please see the .

The more I hear about Dick’s work, personality, and goodwill, the more I wish I had a chance to know him. As 51±¬ÁϹÙÍø's 19th President, I am grateful for those leaders like Dick who came before me.
