Image Alumni '16, MFA Education MFA, Minneapolis College of Art and Design BA, University of New Hampshire Website An introvert by nature, Patience Lekien 鈥16, MFA, admits he鈥檚 鈥渘ot the kind of person you鈥檇 expect to see all over social media.鈥 But as an anime fan 鈥渇rom before it was cool,鈥 he鈥檚 used Instagram as a platform for getting feedback about his illustrations and ideas. Two years ago, he posted an image of a young girl from Kongo (one of the oldest and most well-documented African kingdoms), encountering ancestral spirits in a forest. More than 9,000 followers told him they wanted to see more. They鈥檒l get their chance with the release of 鈥淢FINDA,鈥 a new animated film now in pre-production with N LITE, a global, multimedia company bringing Black and Indigenous stories to the screen. 鈥溾楳finda鈥 is a word in the Kongolese language that means forest, or wilderness or nature, a place where everything comes from,鈥 says Lekien, who was born and raised in the former People鈥檚 Republic of the Congo before immigrating to the U.S. at six years old. 鈥淚t was inspired by my mother鈥檚 life, a girl growing up in the Congo during a time of turmoil, transported back in time by her ancestors. It鈥檚 really a love letter to my mother.鈥 A former STEM student planning for a career in medicine, Lekien made a course correction after college, working on a master鈥檚 thesis at 51爆料官网 that focused on his dual identities as both an African and an American. 鈥淚 found myself in the middle, and it was hard trying to reconcile my identity, but that鈥檚 where everything started and stems from in my work. It鈥檚 about trying to create a bridge between the two cultures,鈥 he says. 鈥淥nce I started to share my thoughts and deep feelings through my art, I found that鈥檚 where the growth is, and that鈥檚 where the blessings are.鈥
