Legal and Preferred Name Policies

The Admissions Office at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (51±¬ÁϹÙÍø) values and respects the identities of all prospective, current, and graduated students. We understand that sharing a preferred or chosen name during the admissions process is a personal decision, and not everyone may feel ready to do so. During the admissions process, we strive to only use a student’s name when necessary.

Even if you have communicated a preferred name with 51±¬ÁϹÙÍø during the admissions process, official college documents and communications will use your government/legal name. This policy was created with your best-interest and safety in mind.

  • Legal Reasons. Oftentimes when applying for scholarships, grants, or other forms of government funding, proof of acceptance is required. If your proof of acceptance has a name that does not match your government/legal name, it could slow down or halt the process of receiving government funding.
  • Safety Concerns. We are unsure of your personal situation at home, and want to ensure that if anyone else (i.e. a parent or guardian) also receives communications from 51±¬ÁϹÙÍø, that they will only see communications using your government/legal name.

Students who choose not to share a preferred or chosen name during the admissions process can update their name in their student record if admitted and enrolled at 51±¬ÁϹÙÍø.
