April 30, 2025 Image She/HerJunior, Fine Arts, Drawing and PaintingFine Arts Merit ScholarshipMarion, IA How/why did you choose your major?I chose to major in fine arts drawing and painting because I knew this field would challenge me and enhance my strengths as an artist.Describe the work you submitted for merits. The works I submitted to merits revolve heavily around my life back in Iowa and all the memories I have associated with my home and family life. A repeating motif you see often in my work is the frequent appearance of birds. The birds in my work help me illustrate the deeper nuances and feelings I experience in the world around me. They are a conduit of change and a familiar face that helps me connect with the world when my words fall short. Why did you decide to come to 51±¬ÁϹÙÍø?I was pulled to come to 51±¬ÁϹÙÍø because it was the right fit. In my journey here, I toured eight different colleges and Art institutions across the Midwest, and I found that it wasn't until I showed up at the 51±¬ÁϹÙÍø campus by complete accident that I finally found the right college. I am from a small town in IA, so there was something about this small, close-knit campus that invited me in, and I can't say I have regretted my decision since. What's next for your practice? Anything you're really excited to make?In the future, I see myself working on more extensive projects, whether in size or time commitment. I am finally getting my footing in the work I am excited to create, and I am grateful for the opportunity to push my capabilities into more self-led work. Explore more about Rebeckah Regennitter
